Social Media is changing SEO.

Martin Waxman, professor for UofT’s Digital Reputation Management course, taught us about SEO and the effects of Social Media. Specifically this is called Off Page SEO.

Off Page SEO:

  • actions external to the website to optimize it for search engines
  • these ‘actions’ include mentions on social media (Likes, Tweets, Pins, +1’s, etc.)

2010 brought an era where social media signals were a search ranking factor. And today, Google+, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest are the most important Social Media platforms to SEO. In fact, Social is one of the three pillars of SEO:


One of the biggest benefits of social media for SEO is the fact that it helps your content get indexed faster.  Also, high levels of social activity show search engines that you’re authentic, engaged, and valuable to readers.
